Brief 11: YCN Topdeck - Website Ideas

Why a Website?
The brief asks to replace brochures as the main method of delivery to the UK audience. To do this, I wanted to create a website that would contain all of the content that is featured in the brochure. This was the main reason I picked the brief, as I wanted to create a website for my portfolio that was quite substantial and would be fun to do.

Aim
So, to make the website a bit different I wanted to focus on making the experience easy and enjoyable for the user - as Topdeck say in the brief, they take the stress away from travelling, which is what I wanted to portray in the website. It would include info about the destinations, trips and brochures, as well as giving travel inspiration and the opportunity for users to search for a trip.

Biggest Challenge
The main focus of this then would be the way the user searches for a trip - I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the best way to do this would be.
The biggest challenge I came across was how to let the user search for their destination -

  • Should it be a map
  • Should it be a drop down menu,
  • How do I differentiate continent and countries
  • How do I allow them to make multiple choices
  • How do i make it different?
I wanted the user to be able to draw their own route on a map to make it a unique feature on the website, but it was hard to figure out how this would work.

I really wanted to make this a fun experience for the user while still being simple, straightforward to use and getting across all of the relevant information. This was definitely the trickiest part of the whole project, so I did a lot of sketches to try and figure this problem out. The reason I wanted it to be different is to that I wasn't just making their current website pretty - I wanted it to be different and really be useful to the user.
