Brief 11: YCN Topdeck Travel - App Icons

I needed to create icons for the explore page of the app, and there are a few illustration styles Topdeck include in their rebranded brochures, so I had a look at them to see which is more appropriate for the app.

This is the style they go for on their illustrated maps, which is really fun and colourful. Although I love this style, I don't think it will be entirely appropriate for the app which is more clean and clear.

This is just flat line illustrations they use, and it would work as app icons, although it can be seen as a bit more boring and minimal

Whereas although these illustrations are similar, they have thicker outlines and are more interesting with the inline shadow they use. This is the style I think I will go for as it seems the most appropriate for an app, it is clear and still interesting.

Here are some of the icons that I developed
I began with doing some mountains to represent the outdoors

I added some caps the mountains to make them more interesting

I tried them on a white background and a yellow background, and I feel like the yellow is more interesting

I made the shadow thicker so it was more visible at a smaller scale

For the instagram opportunity one I started by creating a polaroid/instagram card but felt it was quite boring and not very clear

So I started to draw a camera instead, which I think works better

I drew a tennis ball for sports. They already have a few sports related icons in their North America brochure, so I wanted a variation of that rather than the same thing

I tried a few options for Food, and started trying to do a pizza, but I felt it might not be very clear at a small scale

I also tried doing a chefs hat, but I wasn't liking how it was looking

I tried a few variations of a bucket

I felt this was the most clear and matched the other icons with it being flat

I decided to do an oriental fan to represent  living like a local since it is quite iconic of culture

I decided to do a music note for festivals since that is a common festival

Here are all the icons in context on the Explore page
