Brief 12: Yearbook - Design Decisions

We've met up a few times this week to discuss the progress of the book and to make decisions.

Cover Image
We wanted to have a cover image for the book that represents the course, stands out immediately and reflects the tribal theme that we want throughout the book.

Since the students have been sending me their work, I know what it all looks like and have been keeping my eye out for appropriate images. There is one that immediately stands out to me for being incredible and exactly what we are looking for, so I showed the guys it. They all equally liked it and think it represents the book.

The colours are ecletric and we know that we could pull a colour out of this to use throughout duotone images in the book.

Questions for Evolution
Since our initial email, we have got the green light to say that our proposal is on budget and doable. However, we still had a few questions that we wanted to ask:

  • What colour and materials are the screws?
  • How much do we need to allow for margins due to having the screws?
  • Is it possible to have a proof print - and how much would this be?
  • If we were to send the book to print before our given deadline (May 20), would they still print it earlier?

Leo asked these questions via email.

Screws
  • Size is 10mm, so leave 20mm for margin - 5mm on each side
  • They come in black, copper and nickel
We decided that black would be the safest option and would look smart against the stock and imagery.

Printing Date
If we sent it to print earlier they would print it earlier - we decided our deadline should be May 7 so that we get it back in time to photograph for our deadline

Book Contents
We went through the pages of the book and decided how many spreads we would allocate for the content and how to fill up the 96 pages.

48 Spreads

Job Allocations
We decided to allocate each other jobs to do and get started.

We broke up each infographic to give to each other
  • Jordan - Tools and visual moodboard
  • Leo - day in the life and music
  • Joe - tally and contents page
  • Me - quotes infographics, resize images

Fonts
Since this, we also decided that Jordan and Joe should work on a tribal themed display typeface as well as creating some hand rendered symbols that can be used throughout.

For bodycopy we agreed on Akzidents.

Quotes
We went through the quotes the students had come up with in the survey to see what would work best in the book. They need to reflect the culture of the course, as well as input a bit of humour and something interesting that people would want to read and make them excited about the course.

  • Print all day - party all night
  • I work hard in my social jungle with all my creative monkeys
  • Wake up, have a coffee, pick a fabulous outfit, grab a quick coffee at uni and start the day with some drawing/painting
  • One thing that has always kept a smile on my face through my time here, is the people.
  • No day is the same in the studio, but that’s what makes it such an exciting environment to be in.
  • Everyone in the studio seems to bounce off one another
  • Scalpel to the finger, needle in the thumb, paper cut, burn from heat press/iron

As I am doing the quotes, I needed Jordan to send me images that Bessie had taken of the textiles studio to pair up with them.

I think these would look great enlarged in the typeface Jordan and Joe create against some of the images Bessie used.
