Brief 13: DBA - Initial Ideas

Group
I am in a group with Sarah Goldthorpe, Sarah Heal, Daisy Conway and Mel Hardcastle. I have worked with Sarah Heal before so I know what she is capable of and would be good to work with again; I worked with Sarah Goldthorpe briefly a few weeks ago which was fun and I know how hard working she is so it would be good to work with her again; I have worked with Daisy on group branding projects before and again, she is a hard worker so I know that she will deliver, and I have never worked with Mel before so this will be a good opportunity to collaborate with somebody new.

Initial Thoughts
At home, me and Sarah Heal began to think of reasons why people should come to the North over London.

I thought of reasons why I want to stay in Leeds initially

  • Proximity to everything - no commute, can walk most places
  • Amenities - has everything I could ever want in the form of entertainment, bars, things to do etc
  • Friendly/safe people and atmosphere
Then we thought of reasons why the North is generally a good place to work/live:
  • Proud
  • Approachable
  • Friendly
  • Professional
  • Fun
  • More time to live your life/less time commuting
  • No divide anymore
  • More room to breathe
  • Less hassle
'The North is More' is something that stuck, and I thought this would be good to bring up to the rest of the group. Different words can be added to the end of the sentence to give it new meanings.

We also spoke to a Southerner we knew, and asked him what he thought were the main differences between the two. He said that the people were the main difference, and he found that they are more approachable and friendly. He also noted that in London people do not notice the North/South divide, whereas up here it is definitely a bigger topic. This got me thinking that perhaps we shouldn't mention the North/South divide, because it can make us seem more bitter instead of concentrating on the fact that we can work together/not focus on that.

1st Meeting
We decided to meet up the following week to discuss initial ideas after having looked through the brief and had the weekend to think of things.

We were discussing how we think we should stay away from talking about cities in particular as these can change, grow, and different landmarks can come and go. So for a more permanent solution, concentrating on the North as a whole is a better direction to go in.

We was talking about all of our ideas, and when we were discussing the north is more concept, Sarah H turned it the other way to say that Less is North (Less is more). We liked this idea and I thought of ways it is less

The north is less:
  • Stressful
  • Cramped
  • Hassle
  • Stretch
  • Complicated
We did think that it might be a bit negative, and therefore didn't decide on it the definite route to go down, but a possibility as we had a few different ideas.

From this, we decided to work on developing ideas further before we met up again.
