Brief 12: Yearbook - Initial Ideas

The three of us, me, Jordan and Joe, met up and started to think of initial ideas.

Year Books
We looked at the two previous yearbooks that have been published to see what content they had and think about what we would change about them.

2014
We felt that this was really well designed, and the layout of the work was easy to read. However, we noticed a few things:

  • Lacked personality
  • The key didn't seem to be used a lot/very relevant
  • Augmented reality seemed to take effort as you have to download an app from a website
Things we felt were good:
  • Including the achievements/experience of a designer
  • Perhaps having a word cap on the bio
  • The amount of work per person
  • Having breaks

2013
This was very different to last years book, and was in a square format.

Things we felt worked were:
  • spot varnish on the cover
  • the concept of the key
Things we didn't think worked:
  • Noticed a mistake on someone's work - we'll have to make sure all photographs/work is correct
  • The key was confusing to use and meant reader had to refer back to the beginning all of the time
  • The square format is something we've been told to stay away from

Initial Ideas

  • We thought it would be a good idea to add more personality within the book as it is important to show a person as well as their work.
  • Class photo - this can fold out
  • Illustrations of either each person or things to represent them
  • Important to have a photo/image of them as it gives more personality, allows people give a name to a face
  • Different stocks to be used throughout the book to showed different sections
  • Branding could be created for the project, for example on social media, ebook, website and exhibition
  • A shorter page within each persons profile to show the bio and info about them, and use the double page spread to showcase their work
  • Create a key to show competitions, live briefs, exhibitions, collaboration, area of design
  • Represent us as a year, individuality, connected, close, awareness, concerned with current issues
  • In conscious style - possible name
  • Both year books had a very strict layout, limiting the way people could display work, so we thought it would be good to have a grid which would enable people to have different layouts depending on the nature and size of their work.

I wrote down our notes as well as a few spider diagrams thinking about format, binding and categorising everyone.

Instagram
We decided that it would be a really good idea to create an Instagram account showcasing all of the work from our year. This would be good to show studios what we are about before our exhibition, so they can see how talented everyone is. We could show people's work, the production of the yearbook, preparation for the exhibition and pictures from around the college.
It could be branded to fit in with the yearbook and exhibition so it is a consistent brand for the year. For now it is just LCA BAGD while we build up posts and followers, ahead of the presentation.
We decided to use the hashtags #LCABAGD and #LCABAGD1215 and told everyone in the class about it so they could send us work.
We started uploading work from people in the class on it to gain followers and likes before next weeks presentation to show how successful it can be.

Tasks
We decided to think of tasks to do each over the weekend so we can put the presentation together early next week.
  • Think of different binding methods that would work with our different paper sizes idea
  • Possible layout ideas
