Brief 5: Dr. Me Workshop

Today the Manchester based studio, Dr. Me came in to do a day long brief with us. We were paired up alphabetically, and so my partner was Jordan.

The day was separated into three different briefs.

Brief 1
To create a vinyl sleeve for a mix by Evian Christ. The client suggested a visualisation of the 10hz tapping sound made by a duga 3 transmitter was used.

Me and Jordan listened to the mix, and created a mindmap of words we thought represented the music. We felt it was quite ambient, and had lots of different noises that resembled the outdoors and animals.

From that, I looked for some free stock images that represented nature and the outdoors. I made a pinboard for these images.

We also looked at what a duga 3 transmitter was, and noticed that from an aerial view there is a hexagon shape that we thought we could use on the vinyl.

We printed off the images we thought were best so we could see what worked well together

We then looked through a couple of Vice magazines to see if we could find anything that we could use for a collage.

I came across these hexagon shapes that were similar to that of the shape of the transmitter, so I saved these. I knew I could recreate something similar in Photoshop that would work.

I created a few hexagons to see if I could recreate an abstract style.

We then decided to do a design each, as we needed to present two.

Here was my design. I decided to create a series of hexagons, which had lots of different layers in, to represent the many sounds in the mix. Each hexagon has a different image inside which represent parts of the song, such as sea, jungle, instruments etc. Then on top of these I added lots of brushes and changed the blending options and opacities to make them more abstract. This was to show the abstract and openness of the song.

This was Jordan's design - he used the image of the transmitter and duplicated it to create this pattern. He also added the cross in the middle, which represents the artists' last name, Christ.

I prefer Jordan's design as it has a lot more impact - it really draws you in. However, I enjoyed the doing the brief and thought we both had good, relevant outcomes.

Brief 2
For the next brief, we had to create a poster for the band Odinos. Again, we both did a design each.
Of the three colours, Dr. Me suggested the blue/purple one as the strongest, which I agree with.

Dr. Me said that they liked the poster, but perhaps changed the typeface, so I went with Roboto.

Brief 3
This was self directed, and we had to create a piece of artwork within the dimensions 23x16cm. I decided to draw a sun, just because I wanted to. I created it quickly on Photoshop, as we only had ten minutes to the end of the workshop at this point. I mainly used the clipping mask and brush tool to create the rough edges of the sun rays. I am happy with the outcome.

Overall
I really enjoyed working with Jordan, we thought of concepts well together, then happily created a design each by ourselves, but still giving feedback. I feel this was a more productive way of working - coming up with ideas together, then creating a resolution separately. I enjoyed the workshop on the whole, as it was good to get feedback from a studio who are successful in the industry. When they gave feedback to my work they were positive, which gave me more confidence.
