Brief 7: Design Something More - Research

I have never designed an app before, so I felt really in the dark about how they look and what to include on them. So I did quite a lot of research looking at different app patterns, using apps and thinking about my dissertation research.

Water Supplier Research

Water Conservation
As I wanted tips on how to save water on my app, I looked on this website for different tips and facts that I could use.

Personal Experience
I also had some bad experience with my own water supplier the past couple of weeks, so I rang them up a few times. As well as sorting out my own problems, I asked an employee on the phone a few questions that would help shape my content and give me better knowledge on the subject.

Bills/Letters
I asked my mum some questions about water suppliers as well because she has more experience with it than me. I asked about water meter readings, when you give them, how you give them etc, and how you pay the supplier. She sent me some examples of water bills and letters so I got a better idea of what content to include.

App Research

Points I Learnt

  • Coach mark - these are hints and tips that appear on the screen to help guide the user on what to do
  • Launch screen is the first thing the user sees when they open the app as it loads
  • Logo - I thought this would be on the header of every app page, and I realised that most of the time it isn't. I didn't realise that before so it was good I spotted it for my own design.
  • Walkthroughs - I didn't notice these before either. I think these will be a really good way of showing the features of my app.
