I started thinking of ideas for the wall space through a mindmap. This was a quick turn around brief, so as soon as me and Sarah started the project we immediately began doing visual research and planning our idea.
Collaboration
I wanted to collaborate with someone because I like working in a team but haven't done so yet this year, and feel it could be a big project so would be better to do it with someone so we can make it very thorough and more successful. I decided to ask Sarah Goldthorpe if she would like to do it with me, as I feel we both have a very strong work ethic and so we would both work hard to make it a success. I also think she is very talented at typographic design, and since this would probably involve type I think she would do well with it.
There is More to Life Than Graphic Design
I came up with one idea in particular that I thought would be good to take further. The past couple of years on the course I have been so focussed on design and done work all the time. This was really unproductive because I would sit 'doing work' all day, when in reality I wouldn't get much done and would be bored as I wouldn't allow myself to have any fun thinking I needed to be working.
This year however, I make time to cook meals every day rather than ordering out because I didn't think I had enough time and go to the gym a lot more, so now I have more energy to do work and generally done things I wanted to like go to the cinema, see friends etc. I have been much more productive this time around because I know that I need to get work done in order to do the things I want. My work has improved and I have gotten faster at doing it as well since I am doing more things. It has made me realise that I can still do design, and actually enjoy it more, because I have a life now. I also think it improves my design because I am actually looking around me at things that exist and thinking how I could solve problems or create based on things that I see.
I also think that previously I would sit on my computer and scroll through Behance looking at other people's work, when now I never do that! I just draw inspiration from everyday life and don't become too absorbed in what others are doing as I find that it can be quite demotivating seeing all this amazing work. I do still look at other peoples work but I don't spend as much time doing it, and it's more fun to do it now.
I think of ideas for projects now based on the things I do outside of graphic design, rather than thinking of projects based on what other people are doing on Behance etc. I think this is really important, and is why I want to take this idea further.
Type
I was thinking this could be a big typographic piece so that it stands out. I think it is quite controversial, so when people first see it they might not understand and it would provoke a reaction. I want to do a project like this, as when I usually think of ideas they are very safe and boring. It would also show that if it a lot of time had been taken to make a typographic piece, that it isn't all what it seems.
Image
I thought on the upstairs wall space, icons could be created to show all of the things that life has to offer other than graphic design. This would connect the two, show both sides of the course (type + image) and let people see where they can look other than design to draw inspiration from.
